An increase in the supply of newly built property in Sofia was to be expected in the beginning of 2007; according to real estate agents. Nearly 24 000 construction permits were issued only for the first nine months of 2005, National Statistical Institute data showed. The number exceeded more than two times the constructions begun in 2004, Darik Radio said. More than 35 000 new apartments would be offered for sale by the end of 2007, Dark said. Part of them would be sold even as projects and re-sold later at higher prices. Rise in the prices of newly built property was hardly probable until the end of 2006. If the demand to supply ratio remained unchanged, prices could rise by five to 10 per cent in the first three months of next year. The profit of construction companies decreased because of the high supply and competition, Darik said. The price of construction materials would probably rise by six to seven per cent in 2007, but it would not affect seriously the newly built property prices.

Current President Georgi Purvanov accepted a nomination for second term in office on August 25 Purvanov received the support of a nomination committee, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported. By Thursday August 24, 99 committees comprised of artists, athletes, scientists and educators said they were going to support Purvanov in his attempt to get second term in office. The presidential elections would take place on Ocotber 22. The presidential elections should not be seen as a referendum in support or against the current ruling coalition, Purvanov said. The ruling tripartite majority resulted from the 2005 parliamentary elections and should not interfere in the upcoming presidential elections, Purvanov said.

An influx of nearly 620 000 migrants to the UK could be expected after Bulgaria and Romania entered the EU, the think tank Open Europe said.

The number of migrant workers that entered the British labour market after the EU accession of new countries in 2004 caused tensions, as more and more locals found themselves unable to get a job. Official statistics show that nearly 427 000 Eastern European migrants registered for work with British employers, Sunday Times said. If the self-employed migrants were added to the account, the total was near 600 000.
